TEAM HISTORY
The GR team was formally established in 2010 after a number of years of informal 'friendlies' at Bisley and overseas. An official handgun team was subsequently established in 2022 - despite the legal and logistical challenges of ownership of centre-fire handguns in Britain. Both teams represent the pinnacle of the shooting sports in their respective fields and have demonstrated time and again that Capability, Consistency and Commitment lead to success.
GR was endorsed by the UK National Rifle Association in 2010, as the officially recognised Gallery Rifle team representing GB. Under the Captaincy of Ash Dagger, the Team competed in competitions run under the auspices of the International Gallery Rifle Federation (IGRF) in GB and overseas in Germany, Ireland and South Africa. However, the IGRF scope continued to expand, bringing in such countries as Australia and always looking to welcome more into the IGRF community.

The 'Originals' from 2010 !
Prior to the 1997 handgun ban, GB actively participated in international handgun shooting under the auspices of the WA1500 international governing body; we were a founding member country of the WA1500 and, despite the ban, have maintained a presence in many of the competitions since then, largely through the commitment and determination of a few individuals. Teams had the backing of the NRA but there was not a formally recognised GB Handgun Team until 2022, when David Harris was elected Captain. He took the GB Handgun Team to the WA1500 World Championships held in Sweden in 2023.

The 2025 Handgun Team in Germany
With no warm up year, this was baptism by fire. Despite that, GB had teams in all disciplines (Revolver, Pistol & Optical), shot scores in touch with the teams above them and beat the Norwegians in every event. Given that the Norwegians have access to these type of firearms and can practice regularly, that was quite an achievement for GB. David was re-elected Captain for 2024 & 2025 and the Team competed in the 2024 European Championships in Romania and the 2025 World Championships in Germany. There were fewer teams in Romania due to the difficult logistics and the heat at that time of year; the ranges were in the high 30’s and sometimes over 40 degrees C for most of the week. This was a severe challenge both to the shooters and their equipment. Despite that, the GB Handgun Team beat Italy in the Revolver and Italy and Moldova in the Pistol. Scores were again in touch with the teams above. A very promising result, and the story continues !
Appointment of Captains for Gallery Rifle and Pistol / Handgun Teams
Being appointed Captain of a GB team is a highly sought after and prestigious position. However, it is also a demanding and varied role, as you need the skills to lead, inspire and manage the team and the drive and determination to win the events.
It is likely (but not essential) that you will have been in one of the squads at some point. However, the qualifying criteria for Captain includes (as per all the squad) mandated UK NRA membership. This is because, apart from the leadership role, you will also be the ambassador for GB, the UK NRA and shooting in general. If fact, one of the key roles is to ensure that you and your team conducts itself in a manner that is becoming of an International Squad.
Captains are appointed by the UK NRA, on the recommendation of the Discipline Head. However, in line with the natural cycle of international events - especially the 2-year cycle of the IGRF and WA1500 World Cups - a GR Captain would normally be offered a longer tenure. This allows for a period to establish and build a cohesive Team and a year to provide a substantial challenge for the World Cup events. For the Handgun Captain, due to the unique nature of the logistics involved, their appointment is for a specific tour and event.
The process to actually appoint a Captain is laid out in the UK NRA's "Procedures & Rules for the appointment of Great Britain and NRA Team Captains". Annex D is the process for GR&P... linked here
Squad Selection

To be considered for one of the shooting squads requires you to demonstrate three key personal characteristics :

Capability The ability to achieve the high scores required in International shooting
Consistency A track record that demonstrates repeatable high performance in comps
Commitment The willingness to support the Team at home and abroad
In reality, this means that you :-
-
Gallery Rifle - Must be in the rankings top 10 for one of the main disciplines (for GR, that is 1500 SB or CF) and preferably top 20 for the second one.
-
Handgun - this will likely mean you have a good track record and high rankings in LBR and / or CF handgun 1500 and associated WA1500 matches. You can be shooting optic or iron sights but with an extension rod that is not used for support.
-
Must act as an ambassador for Great Britain, Gallery Rifle and Pistol, and the UK NRA.
-
Must act as a GR&P/ shooting role model, thereby encouraging others into the sport and giving them something to aspire to.
-
Must be prepared to travel to at least one of the International shoots outside of GB.
-
Must be prepared to come to training sessions at Bisley or relevant clubs.
-
Must be supportive of fund raising activities.
-
Must contribute to the overall team spirit and the success of the team.

High place rankings can be achieved through the annual GR&P competition circuit in GB, such as the four NRA events at Bisley (SAW, Phoenix, Nationals and AAW), plus the wider club competitions, such as Basildon, Derby, Frome, SLG Bisley, the Welsh Open, Scottish Open and JSPC events. Typically, you should seek to submit at least four to six qualifying scores in a season. In addition, you may demonstrate qualifying scores in events outside of GB, where it's relevant.

The process typically follows these steps :-

-
Shooting Squad qualification requirements to be published in each Summer Journal to encourage aspirations.
-
Rolling National Ranking Tables are maintained, incorporating the results from all formally recognised GR &P competitions; Adjutant collates performance data from these Tables and the previous year’s International competitions.
-
Captain and Vice-Captain review capability, consistency and commitment, then propose Shooting Squad.
-
Proposed Shooting Squad reviewed by GB GR&P Team Committee and final list prepared.
-
Captain contacts each potential Shooting Squad member to outline requirements, confirm commitment and offer place in Shooting Squad where appropriate.
-
All successful Shooting Squad members complete GDPR forms & Adjutant / secretary updates Contact Details.
Team GB - Award of Colours.
Colours are a formal badge awarded in recognition of the sport and year in which someone participated in International competition representing their country. These are managed and awarded by the management bodies of international teams, a process which is agreed with the NGBs - in our case the NRA.
The GB GR & HG Teams Committee will govern and award Colours for people who have competed (i.e. shot as part of the GB team) or have been non-shooting Captains in either an IGRF International Match or a WA1500 International Match.
Anyone who had shot in at least one International (GR and/or HG) will be awarded Colours and be able to order the appropriate badge. These would be ordered at the end of each season. This also applies to non-shooting Captains. This award is retrospective. We have the records for those who’ve shot in IGRF or WA1500 Internationals since the formal inauguration of both the Gallery Rifle (2010) and Handgun (2023) GB Teams.
The Colours will be formally awarded, recipients advised and as a one-off, given the option to buy a badge (estimated cost £10-15) for each year in which they represented GB Internationally.
If you would like to purchase a badge(s), please contact the committee.
